It's  time for Sepia Saturday again.....come see.

Sepia Saturday 60 : 5 February 2011

I think i'll continue with Iva...

this is Iva, her mother, Mary, and her 6 sisters. She also had 7 brother's, but i have yet to find a photo of them.

The second photo is Iva in her later years. It is my favorite photo of her, standing there with her hand on her hip. She was a pistol.

Her hair hung to her knees, i remember sitting watching her brush it at night before bed. She would brush 100 strokes, then braid it.

  1. Glad you put another link in - otherwise I would have missed these wonderful pictures! I recently read that brushing your hair 100 strokes really isn't a good thing. Which is fine with me because I've only tried it once. By the time I was finished I had so much static electricity in my hair I might have killed myself if I touched a doorknob.

  2. This looks like a fun group of women. I'd love to be there for some of the conversations around the kitchen table.

  7. How fun! I love love LOVE old photos. I have a lot in storage and wish I had brought them with us on our last move. Especially our military family photos I've been inspired to attempt to photograph and collage them to remember our history. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I'm glad you liked the mosaic. I can't wait to poke around your blog! [yup, nosey!] ;)

  8. In the first photo I relize the joy of your ancients, the people on old photos often are looking so earnest not on yours. I also remember the long hair of my grandmother and the 100 strokes, than she put it on her head to a special hairdress.

  9. These are some kind of women! And Ida, look at that stance. It was common to brush hair 100 strokes especially when it was that long, and using a strong brush too. My grandmother did that too and then tucked it all up into a bun. Maybe you will share more about Ida in other posts--what made her into such a pistol and all

  13. I especially like the photo of the grandmother, the mother and the 6 daughters. The mother looks surprisingly calm for a woman with 13 children.
