My grandparents.

This is going to be linked to  Sepia Saturday , along with other fine photos to enjoy and read about, come see at         Sepia Saturday 60 : 5 February 2011

..I really don't know a lot about my family, but i do get tid bits now and then when my big sister gets to talking.
I am the youngest of 5, so by the time i was interested in hearing the stories, everyone else was tired of them. Now there is only me and two of my sisters left. I'm slowly learning all i can about the family past, so i can pass it down to my kids, they to theirs and so on.
I'll start with my maternal grandparents, Frank and Iva Green. She was 29 when they married. In those days that was OLD to still be single. My sister Judy believes she married him because of her age and the fear of forever being alone...but i believe she loved him. When you think about him being an full indian and her being white, and what that must have meant for them in those days. A white woman with a red man!
He was killed at the age of 35 when a brick wall fell on him. He left behind Iva and 4 kids, my mother being one of them.
There is one story that says he was a train robber once...which is really funny, as Iva's father was a U.S Marshal.
These two have been a mystery for a long time. Many in the family have tried to find more of their story, but too much time has gone by and taken their story with it.

  1. What a great picture. The story of Frank must be quite something - if only we knew.

  2. This is wonderful. I love your writing and the photo! Have you gotten a hold of any of the newspapers from their era and town? I can't believe how much detail some of them have about the every day lives of our ancestors. I hope you are able to learn more about this couple.

  3. What a wonderful mystery! Iva marrying an Indian who may have been a train robber...her father couldn't have been happy about that. I like to think she married for love too. Maybe she waited so long because she didn't have the courage to marry him before then. I do hope you find out more about them - SOMEBODY must know something!

  5. A wonderful old photograph, almost overflowing with mystery and possibilities. Time may have taken their story away but we are left with that photograph and those faces which were hiding who knows what.

  8. Linda that is beautiful. You are a perfect candidate to do SS. Your photos are amazing. Sometimes if I don't have a family photo, I go to Google and find an old photo of my home town or something that happened years ago that I remember reading about or seeing on the news. You will find as you read other post, some different ideas of how to present a post. Glad you came by.

  12. Well if you don't have the stories, you do have a lovely photo. Others have made suggestions I had, local newspapers, libraries, etc. I have found a lot of info. on Ancestry.com the past year. I noticed how all three had middle parts to their hair. Yes, it was a step for her to marry an Indian at that time. This is my first visit to your blog. My dear friend in CA has COPD and on oxygen too, but she tries to go without the oxy. at times and that does not work.

  13. The picture and your story are wonderful! I love the detail in the dress and blouse - perhaps she made them. I am the oldest daughter in my family and know much more and met many more of my older relatives than my younger brothers and sisters. Even with that what I learned of family history before grandparents and great grandparents died is just a tiny insignificant look into their amazing lives. I have a family tree at Ancestry.com and have found loads of documents that help tell their story.
I look forward to your Sepia Saturday posts!
